My 5 Favorite Books {I think?}

| 2 Comments

For Christmas my husband surprised me with a Sony Reader {smile} and I have to admit that it is probably one of the best gifts I have ever received. I absolutely love to read! I don’t know how he knew, unless he took notice of the stacks of books on my nightstand, floor, dresser, closet, table, piano…ha ha. :)

I started thinking about all of the books I have read throughout the years and I thought it would be fun to write a post about my 5 favorite. To help me narrow my list down, I decided that I would only include the books that I would want to read again…and again…and again…so here goes nothing:

Oh, and these are definitely not in any kind of order…that would have been way too hard.

The Great Divorce:

This is an amazing book by C.S. Lewis. I love books that give you a lot to think about and this one gave me a TON to think about. It is about a man who lives in “hell” who is given the opportunity to take a bus ride to visit heaven. While he is there he is witness to the interactions between those that are visiting with those who are living in heaven (many coming in contact with old relations, friends, and even “enemies” from their earth life). It is interesting to see why some people decided to get back on the bus and go back to hell and why others chose and desired to stay. It made me think about forgiveness in a whole new light, as something I would want to do for my own happiness, and that if I choose to not forgive others (no matter what it is they have done) I am really only hurting myself.

The Secret Life of Bees:

I read this book about a year ago and I absolutely fell in love with it from page 1. It is a growing up story, about a young white girl who finds herself in the care of three loving black women in South Carolina. It is a story about overcoming prejudice, and finding peace and forgiveness. {fyi: The book is way better than the movie…as almost all books are. he he.}

The Hiding Place:

I loved this book. I guess I have always been drawn to inspirational WWII stories and this has definitely become one of my favorite. It is a true account written by Corrie Ten Boom about her experience of hiding Jews in her home during the war, and then her experience of being placed in a Concentration Camp. It is a story of bravery and integrity, honesty and forgiveness. Doing what is right despite the fear of being caught. If you haven’t ever read it you definitely need to!

The Chronicles of Narnia:

I actually cheated a little here by picturing the edition that includes all 7 books that are in the series. {ha ha.} Another one of my favorites (or 7 favorites) by C.S. Lewis. It is about a group of siblings and their trips to the magical land of Narnia.  The thing I like about C.S. Lewis is that his writings have deeper meaning that what you might first suspect. I love the movies (the 3 that are out) and the books of course are just a bit better…so you have to read ’em!

Where The Red Fern Grows:

When I was younger my mom used to read to me and my sisters before we went to bed. {That memory has got to be one of my most cherished childhood memories} At one point my mom read us Old Yeller and then Where The Red Fern Grows. Both books are excellent and both books are a bit sad…after each one ended I remember all of us just crying and then determining that we were never going to read any more “dog” books. Only problem with that is that I love both books!

Where the Red Fern Grows is another growing up story about a boy and his dogs and the adventures they share. I just love it.

~~~~~Leave me a comment! I would love to know what some of your favorite books are…since I am always looking for my next favorite!  :)
